In December 2018, Mountain View adopted regulations requiring all STR properties to register with the City and obtain a business license. A property owner or their lessee (pursuant to a written agreement) may operate an STR, defined as any room or accessory dwelling unit rented for 30 or fewer consecutive days. STRs are subject to the same 10% Transient Occupancy Tax as hotel stays.
Licensing and Permits
Mountain View requires hosts to obtain an STR license or permit before listing their property on platforms like Airbnb or VRBO.
Enforcement
Mountain View has low enforcement of STR regulations. Operating without proper licensing or failing to comply with local regulations can result in citations, fines, and potential loss of your permit.
